Sharing this for some friends of mine. One friend wrote this about another friend who’s nearly brand new bone stock GMC Canyon caught on fire and is totaled and GM is not compensating him at all.

Let’s compare Japanese car companies to US ones. A couple buys a new Miata, gets hit by a drunk driver and totals their new Miata before it even pulls into the driveway for the first time. Mazda gives them another one.

My friend !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ‘s new GMC truck catches fire and burns to the ground with him in it. GMC expects him to pay his own deductible and insurance costs for their defect, with no assistance from them. If he would have had a kid strapped in a car seat in the back seat or someone not as quick thinking then they wouldn’t be here.

Greg went back to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Has anyone inspected and proved what the cause of fire was?

I have to say I’m surprised Mazda was that generous. I love the company but to me it looked look like it shouldn’t have been their problem. So them replacing the car speaks volumes for the company. But really GM? Thats ultra shitty.

I believe the insurance company is going over it but so far the source appears to have started near the alternator.

Usually mazda gets a bad rap for customer service.... so.... ND part out?!

sucks about your friend. You’d think that’d be part of the warranty... but then again people would abuse that I’m sure.

One of the reasons that the Mazda comparison was made was because Greg is a member of our local miata club and after this he has bought another Mazda 3 after he sold his last one to buy the Canyon.

The fireman on the scene said the alternator (or what was left of it) looked very suspicious because of the bracket looking like a half melted T-1000 terminator and a basket nest that was the alternator. GM said they’d look at it “if they could”.

My reasoning to them was if this happened and the truck survived, the bumper to bumper warranty would fix it with no money out of my pocket. Now since it is toasted, I’m out my deductible. Also salty about putting a rather large down payment on it, selling my miata, and trading in my 2012 Mazda 3 for this thing. So im also out all that.

Also lost my iPad, a pair of prescription sunglasses that I need for driving because of my photosensitivity, and a spare set. Insurance only gave me $200, however to replace those sunglasses its about $600-$700. So im out that too.

considering the fire investigation into the H3 and so much invested in a new midsize truck, you’d think GM would have a strong interest in why one caught on fire. the last thing they need is widespread spontaneous combustion of new products made entirely by new GM.

Reminds me of the power steering recall Mazda did on the Mazda5 and Mazda3 back around 2011. They recalled them all and fixed them. Quickly. Mine was done crazy fast. And my wife’s old 2006 Chevrolet Malibu had electric steering that quit working whenever it felt like it. GM waited almost ten years to issue a recall on that, and it came only after the recall medley started with the Cobalt ignition switch. Ridiculous.

Step 1: File NHTSA complaint (it looks like at least one other person has filed a complaint about a 590 mile Canyon that caught fire in April):

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplai…

Step 2: Get good lawyer who will make GM pay up.

Step 3: Buy Miata with check from GM.

is there more to the Miata story? I imagine the Mazda dealer has some way of recouping the cost from the drunk driver?
if not then $23k is a pretty cheap marketing expense these days.

Where’s Lehto when you need him?

The situation becomes sticky as a claim was filed, thus starting the ball rolling between you and the insurance company. GM is going to sit on the sidelines until your insurance company goes after them. It gets into a weird thing of trying to be compensated for the same thing my two different groups.

Also the vehicle had 10k miles on it so it wasn’t exactly new. http://coloradofans.com/forums/145-201…

Payment would be seen as accepting full responsibility, in the case of Mazda the drunk was clearly at fault.

It was only 3 months old. If the vehicle didnt catch on fire, the bumper to bumper warranty would have covered what was wrong with it with $0 out of my pocket. Now here I am having to pay my deductible for a fire caused by a defect, then having to get a new car. I dont know about you, but after buying a new truck, I dont expect to be trying to get another new vehicle. I dont want a new truck or a free car, I just want my deductible and my down payment given back to me, so i’m back to where I was when I bought it. With what I owe on it, I will break even with insurance also.

I agree. Drunk guy’s insurance would have covered it. If Mazda is going to needlessly spend the cost if a Miata, do it for someone who can’t afford one and doesn’t already have one.

Though the circumstances really suck that is how depreciation and insurance works when you go through insurance filing a claim for a total vehicle. I think you’re lumping your case between the dealer, GM and your insurance company when all three are separate entities in this instance.

Wow that's unfortunate. You'd think that they would compensate for their fuck up but I guess not. I'd seriously fight them on it because that's just not right. People could have died from that.
